Stress, Meditation Apps, and Therapy | Ask a Beauty Editor

Have a burning beauty question? You’ve come to the right place. Every week, one of our beauty editors will answer readers’ biggest skin-care, hair, and makeup questions in our new series, Ask a Beauty Editor.Reader Question: How have you been dealing with stress and anxiety?During the stressful time of COVID-19, I’ve been reminding myself that it’s OK to take things one day at a time. We don’t really know what the future looks like, and while that may feel scary, it’s also a reminder that trying to control things doesn’t really work, and that staying present is sometimes all we can do. I’ve been letting myself be imperfect, cry when I want to cry, and rest when my body tells me I need a rest. Having a support system is crucial, especially since I live alone — texting, calling, or FaceTiming friends has been important, even if it’s just for a distraction rather than to talk about something that’s bothering me.And though finances can often be a barrier for folks, if you have insurance that covers some of the cost — or can find a provider that does sliding scale therapy — I pretty much always recommend therapy, if it’s something that appeals to you. It’s been a huge help for me over the past few years, and while doing it over Zoom, FaceTime, or the phone has been an adjustment period, it’s invaluable to have a neutral third party to talk to, especially one who is trained to help you cope with tough times.I’ve also been meditating, on my own and with the help of guided meditations. While there are plenty of great meditation apps out there, I’ve been using Headspace while staying at home. The app has tons of different meditation courses you can follow depending on your goals, and also offers guided at-home workouts. Additionally, Headspace has just become free for anyone who is unemployed in the U.S. (in addition to health care providers) — you just have to sign up through this link. All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors.
