Pantene x Dresscode Project Aims to Make Salons More Supportive of the LGBTQ+ Community



With the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, Pride Month will be taking on a much different, socially distanced shape this year. But, as has been the norm over the last few years, many brands — and many beauty brands, specifically — will be announcing Pride initiatives. Pantene’s is especially meaningful. Its partnership with the Dresscode Project not only supports the LGBTQ+ community, it also supports salons — one of the hardest-hit industries during the pandemic — that support the LGBTQ+ community.The Dresscode Project was founded in 2017 with the objective of creating gender-affirming salons and barber shops for LGBTQ+ clients by providing its member business, stylists, and barbers with resources and training. It’s a perfect match for Pantene, which has found that many LGBTQ+ persons changed their hair for what it calls a “transformational moment” — but that it isn’t always easy to find an atmosphere in which making that change is comfortable.”For many, receiving a style that truly celebrates and expresses their identity is not so easy. In fact, a recent study found that 93 percent of all transgender women in the UK have said they were not comfortable going to the salon the first time — and we believe that is true in the U.S. and beyond,” a statement from Pantene says. “That’s why, this Pride, Pantene is partnering with the Dresscode Project, a global alliance of salons and barbershops committed to providing positive, gender-affirming services for LGBTQ+ clients, in order to support their mission of making more salons queer-friendly spaces.”To really help support this mission, Pantene has announced that it will be giving eight salons $10,000 each in order to support the business and enable changes that support and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community — and you can nominate your favorite salon. Just post a photo of the salon you think should get the money on your Instagram, explain in the caption why they should win, and make sure to use the hashtags #pantenexdresscode and #contest and also tag @pantene.
