Brushing your teeth properly might help you live longer, so here are the best electric toothbrushes for pearly whites & healthy gums

THE HYPEIt’s no secret that cleaning your teeth with an electric toothbrush is (approx.) a million times more effective than using a manual brush. I say a million – according to Oral-B, electric toothbrushes technically remove 100% more plaque from your teeth than their manual counterparts do. You can’t argue with stats like that. Dr Reena Wadia, gum specialist and founder of RW Perio confirmed what I already thought: “A rechargeable electric toothbrush has been scientifically shown to be more effective at removing plaque than a manual or battery operated brush,” she told me. “The advantage of an electric toothbrush is that it does the work for you. The bristle movement is optimal – you just need to hold it in the right place.”Sold. So which to buy? The Oral-B Genius X electric toothbrush is highly regarded as being one of the best – particularly since Oral-B reigns supreme in the dentist-approved oral health market. But full priced, this toothbrush is £340 – so you want to be sure it’s worth the hype before making the investment.

Oral-B describes the Genius X Electric Toothbrush as the best electric toothbrush that they offer, and in the product description, they promise “whiter teeth from day one” and “healthier gums forever”.The toothbrush boasts various features which explain the higher price point: it comes with four round heads which boast superior oscillating-rotating and pulsating technology to better clean your teeth and give you healthier gums. The toothbrush also has automatic speed reduction, which alerts you with a flash and slows down the brushing speed if you brush too quickly (definitely me), plus a longer battery life than any other model. Oh, and we almost forgot the sleek travel case which not only charges your toothbrush, but your smartphone, too. Impressive, right? There was one more major selling point for me: the Position Detection Technology. I definitely fall within the 80% of people who leave plaque behind as we’re not covering our entire mouth when we brush. Through Artificial Intelligence, the PDT combines motion sensors in the toothbrush with facial recognition software to see where you’re brushing and guide you as you go. More on that later.
Buy It NowREVIEWERSophie Cockett, Commerce WriterBEAUTY BIOI don’t have bad teeth – according to my dentist – but I know my teeth aren’t perfect. Although they’re fairly straight and white (ish), I’ve never routinely used an electric toothbrush. Feel free to judge. I do own one, but it runs out of charge faster than you can say ‘sparkly gnashers’ which makes travelling a faff. (Pre-Covid I spent a lot of time away, so it was simply easier to take my manual toothbrush with me). As far as dental complaints go, I’ve been suffering with occasionally bleeding gums for a while. Gross, I know. Why? I brush much too hard and far too quickly (my time management is poor so I’m forever in a rush), which irritates my gum line. That’s something I’m eager to fix – and when better than during a lockdown to focus on my oral health?THE REVIEWIn short: I loved it, but not just because it looks pretty on my bathroom cabinet and charges my iPhone. I might be painstakingly late to the party, but I’m an electric toothbrush convert and I won’t ever go back. In fact, let me rephrase: I’m an Oral-B Genius X convert and I won’t ever go back.

When I first got the toothbrush out of its box, I had to connect it to the bluetooth on my phone (which was quick and easy) and download the Oral-B app. The child in me loved the first step – you get to choose the colour of the LED 360 smart ring light which runs around the top of the toothbrush. It makes the brush look super high-end (and would later flash if I was applying too much pressure or brushing too fast). What’s more, if everyone in your household owns the same brush, it’s nice to be able to personalise your own handset. The app has two main features: the timer and the position detection technology. The timer automatically starts when you open the app and start brushing, which means you can ensure you brush for two whole minutes. Alongside the timer is a diagram of your teeth. When you start brushing, all sections of your mouth are blue, but as you’ve brushed each section of your mouth thoroughly, said teeth turn white. It’s really cool to see which areas of your mouth you’re paying the most attention to – I suppose it’s a little like having a dentist or hygienist at home with you, which is genius. Hence the name. I tried the at-home teeth whitening device the Kardashians swear by, so did it live up to the hype?

I was impressed with the choice of six different modes on the brush, although only five are represented with glowing icons. The daily clean mode doesn’t have its own icon, which is a little confusing… That said, if you use the guide the first time you use the brush, you’ll quickly get your head around each mode and its icon. There’s an arrow button which helps you seamlessly switch between each. Besides the daily clean mode, there’s a teeth whitening mode, a gum care mode, and a tongue care mode which lasts for 20 seconds and should be used occasionally. When you finish brushing your teeth, you’re prompted to answer various questions: did you gums bleed? Did you clean your tongue? Did you floss? Did you use mouthwash? Your results, along with the time you spent brushing, the time you applied too much pressure for and therefore your overall brushing score are collated into a brushing summary. It’s easy to check back on previous results to see how well you’re doing and how often you’re reaching that all-important two minute milestone. I found the whole experience to be (unsurprisingly) super motivating and quickly felt in competition with myself to be the best tooth brusher I could be. Who’d have thought I’d ever be writing those words?

Your ultimate guide to gum disease

The Genius X now comes with a sleek travel case which holds the brush handle and up to two brush heads. The brush can be charged from the case which has a USB port, and you can even charge your phone at the same time, making it great for travel. If the technicalities weren’t enough to make me fall in love, the toothbrush looks genuinely stylish. I got it in rose gold – although it’s also available in black and pink with a limited edition case – so it makes brushing my teeth all the more satisfying. The only thing I find a bit of a faff is the fact that I have to take my phone to the bathroom with me every time I brush my teeth. And as someone who is trying to cut down on screen time, I wasn’t particularly thrilled to have to stare at my phone for a further two minutes before bed. I could almost hear my Grandad shouting that he couldn’t believe we even needed our phones to brush our teeth nowadays. But, if it helps me get it right and keeps my mouth healthy? It’s a compromise I’m willing to make.
Buy It NowTHE VERDICT I can’t vouch for the fact that the Oral-B Genius X will give me healthy gums forever, but my mouth already feels so much cleaner. And I’ve only been using it for two weeks. My teeth look noticeably whiter, if only in my lockdown selfies, and I’m finally brushing for the whole two minutes I should. Most importantly, my gums no longer bleed when I brush, due to the pressure sensors and position detection technology. For that reason alone? I’d happily vouch for this electric toothbrush being worth the investment. Buy It Now, with £170 off
