Whilst we all come to terms with the fact that hair salons will be closed until well into the summer, getting to grips with a good at-home hair maintenance routine is essential RN. Split ends out of control? No idea which at-home treatments to use? Keen to train your hair so you can wash it less? We’ve enlisted the expert advice of our resident columnist, Jen Atkin, to share her definitive guide to enhancing your lockdown hair.Our split ends are out of control, what can we do about it?
We are all definitely suffering from cabin fever, and part of that is everybody suddenly wanting to take their self-care up a notch, including hair cuts. But my advice is, proceed with caution. Do a gut check with yourself – if you’re not super confident, then you’re probably not meant to be holding the scissors with your hair, or your willing roommates. Nobody will ever be able to replace the skill or training of your stylist, so don’t do anything crazy or dramatic.
With split ends, if you can wait it out, do. Just start really masking your hair at home – give it the break and love it’s probably needed all this time. There are lots of ingredients that can help seal a split end without cutting, like hair oils. If you can’t wait though, there are some really great resources out there to learn, on YouTube etc.

What treatments do you advise to make the most of lockdown hair?Invest in a good mask to keep things tame. The OUAI Treatment Masque is great once a week, or more if you feel like you need it. It really is a 5-minute hair makeover. Most of us don’t have time to sit with deep conditioning treatments in our strands for hours, or just don’t want to, I get it.. But one of my favourite little hacks is: shower in the morning, then throw a mask in my hair, put it up in a bun, work out for an hour with it still in my hair, letting it do it’s thing, and then rinse again post-workout.How can we train our hair to ensure we can wash it less?This one is simple but hard to do: I never want to hair shame but try going without a shampoo for as long as you possibly can… and then stick to it. When you stop washing so regularly, the scalp can sometimes adjust. Otherwise, you can strip your hair of natural oils if you over-wash. Same with skin, if you over-cleanse your face it’ll get dry and reactive. Get creative with different methods to keep hair looking good in-between washes. OUAI Super Dry Shampoo will be your BFF during social distancing. Start spraying it about 6 inches away from your scalp on your part, then part it 2 inches away and spray, working your way around the oily areas, often around the cowlicks if you have one, or hairline. Once you’re done spraying throughout, use your fingertips to rub it into the scalp and tousle the strands.

How can we boost our scalp health right now that we have more time?There are so many ways… How much time do you have? First, sounds simple but brush your hair! Brushing can help to stimulate the scalp by increasing blood flow, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the hair stem. The act of brushing is so so important.Get yourself a scalp scrub. It’s important to not skip out on taking care of your scalp. Just like the body scrubs you use to exfoliate your body, regular scalp exfoliation removes all of that build up, dead skin cells etc.Another tip, use this WFH time to lay off the hot tools. Refraining from heat styling is the ultimate detox.
And finally, with everyone so focused on their wellbeing, this is a great time to start from within. I really believe that you will not see significant changes in your body, skin, hair, whatever it is you’re trying to target by only doing external remedies. If we wanted to retrain our hair into a new style or parting during lockdown, what are your top tips for that?Training your hair is all about.. well, training it! If you want to train your part to be parted in a different way, use a tail comb to create the part, and non crease clips. Place the crease clips into your hair so it sits for a while and learns to stay put. Continue doing this anytime you style your hair or hanging out at home.What are the three haircare rituals you’d recommend we do once a week?
Mask: I like to deep condition 1-2x a week with a hair mask. I can’t live without theChristopher Robin Prickly Pear Mask or the OUAI Treatment Masque.
Scrub: A little extra scalp TLC is great to do once a week, really treating the roots and resetting your hair. I always feel cleaner and much more refreshed on days I deep clean my scalp. Most people don’t realise, but your scalp has lipid and sweat glands just like your face – so it’s as important to cleanse your scalp, the same way you would your face.
Air Dry: Lay off the heat and let your hair run wild with little to no product.
